Nyungne Fasting & Purification Retreat
Advanced Retreat
@ Buddha Land KMC, Keighley
Saturday 12 & Sunday 13 April
In-person & Livestream
This special fasting and purification practice is performed in conjunction with the practice of the Buddha of Compassion, 1000 -Armed Avalokiteshvara. It is very powerful for purifying negative karma of body, speech, and mind, and for pacifying strong delusions that cause us so much mental pain. It is a special method for receiving blessings and improving our experience of love and compassion.
This practice begins each day at 6.30am with taking the 8 Mahayana Precepts (a promise to work to avoid non-virtue for 24 hours).
We then engage in the Sadhana Drop of Essential Nectar, the powerful chanted practice of 1000-Armed Avalokiteshvara which includes a session of physical prostrations (if you are able, but can be done with simple standing prostrations). Through this we improve our mind of compassion.
There are 3 sessions of these prayers each day.
This practice is done over 2 days, with the 8 Mahayana Precepts being taken at the beginning of each day. On the first day it is customary to abstain from all meals apart from lunch*. On the second day we engage in a complete fast, abstaining from all food and drink for 24 hours.
Those who are unable to engage in a complete fast can participate in the sessions on the second day, provided they take the Mahayana Precepts on that day.
*Our lunch should be eaten before or at 1pm. It should not include eggs, meat, fish, alcohol, garlic, onions or spices.
The sessions are unguided (except for the granting of the Precepts each day). If you wish to attend just one day of the retreat you can do this. Please note that the Mayahana Precepts must be taken each day to to join the sessions.
